21.02.2011: www.thesun.co.uk : No. of Eastern Europeans in UK jails goes up by 850%.

To Rhodri Philips

Dear Mr Philips,
I refer to your article in www.thesun.co.uk entitled No. of Eastern Europeans in UK jails goes up by 850%.

Please find the link to the offending article, together with a link to Wikipedia which confirms the average UK prision population as 95000
The Sun’s figure for Polish inmates of 1240 refers to the whole of the UK. This therefore represents approx 1.3% of the overall total prison population.
The latest UK population figures are said the be 61.8 million.
The estimates regarding the number of Poles living in the UK vary. If you correlate the Polish prison percentage population with the overall UK population, then 1.3% of 61.8 million equates the a figure of 803,400, which is at the lower end of the present day estimates of Polish nationals currently living in Britain.
Therefore your article is misleading and the statement  ”And one in ten foreigners jailed every year is Polish” should have at least been set against the fact that at least 1 in 10 of non-UK passport holders currently residing in the UK are of Polish nationality.

Yours sincerely
Andrzej Tutkaj
