10.11.2010: Corpus Christi Sadness – Message to Archbishop Vincent Nichols – Celebration of All Saints day

Corpus Christi Sadness – Message to Archbishop Vincent Nichols – Celebration of All Saints Day
Date: Wed, 10 Nov 2010 14:45:16 +0000

Your Holiness,
I refer to my previous email of the 3 June 2010 when I expressed my sadness that Corpus Christi was not celebrated on what I considered to my its rightful day. I am grateful for receiving such a warm response form your office.

Since this time we have been all given a huge lift by Pope Benedict’s recent visit to the United Kingdom. I was very much influenced by his message that we should be more confident in expressing the faith in our every day life and actions. No doubt you were very much aware that a large proportion of the crowds that flocked to the main Papal events in Bellahouston Park Glasgow, Hyde Park London and Crofton Park Birmingham were made up of people who were born outside the UK, for example from Poland. Indeed it could be argued that the presence of people from so many different nationalities made all the difference, bolstering the crowds, and therefore greatly contributing towards making the Papal visit in Britain a great success.
As you are also no doubt well aware, practically the whole of Poland celebrates the feast of All Saints and All Souls on the 1st and 2nd November. Literally millions of people travel to visit the graves of their loved ones who may have recently passed away. I was therefore saddened once again that All Saints was not celebrated in Britain on its rightful day, What made things more difficult and indeed embarrassing was the fact that the 7.30pm Mass on Monday 1st November in the Polish church in Ealing was packed with worshippers. The priest conducting this daily mass had quite a job to explain it wasn’t an All Saints Day service. Many probably found  it difficult to come to terms with the fact that they were not able to celebrate this particular feast day on the same day and in union with their friends and family left behind in Poland.
What I am trying to convey is that many of the foreign nationals who have recently come over to the UK and indeed bolstered the successful Papal visit, may also find it difficult to come to terms with the fact that the Roman Catholic feasts are not celebrated in Britain on their rightful days.
Indeed the will of the majority of the post-Papal visit Roman Catholic Church in Britain, made up of so many non-UK born believers, could well be to celebrate Ascension Day, Corpus Christi and All Saints Day on their rightful days.
I therefore trust that you will investigate this fully further and trust that you will be filled with the Holy Spirit when making your decision.
Yours sincerely
